CBD oil has been found to have a lot of benefits to our health including the treatment for depression. But, people still have many concerns about it. Is it safe to use? How to consume CBD oil? Is it addictive? And so many more. Do not to worry, we will cover them all.

What is depression

Depression is a mental health disorder, which affects both your body and your mind. Loss of energy, lack of emotions, no appetite, tiredness, sleep disturbance, reduced ability to think or focus. This is just a few symptoms of depression.

As statistics shows, between 2009 and 2012, about 7.6% of America’s citizens aged 12 and above were diagnosed with depression and it was even more common among females and people aged 40 and 59. In 2015, approximately 16.1 million adults aged 18+ had at least one depressive episode in 2014.

In recent years, numbers grew significantly. Every year a greater number of people hear from their doctor that they have this mental health disorder.

History of depression

In the 19th century, German psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin became the first doctor to distinguish manic depression. These days we know it as bipolar disorder. As doctor Kraepelin was the first one to distinguish it, that doesn’t mean depression didn’t exist before. First written accounts of what we now know as depression appeared in B.C. Mesopotamia. In these ancient writings, depression was described as being a spiritual, not physical condition. All other mental illnesses also were thought to be a spiritual one. And it was thought that these conditions were being caused by demonic possession. That is why it was dealt with by priests rather than physicians.

The 1950 and 60s, were very important years as treatment and understanding of illness went much further. Doctors noticed that new medicine for Tuberculosis made a good impact on some of the patients with depression. In this decade, treatments with medicine started, as before there was just psychotherapy. Those two combined made such a huge difference from then up until now. Many lives were changed and saved.

New era new treatments

Since the 50s and 60s, scientists have found that depression can be treated in countless different ways and it all depends on how serious it is and of course as we are all so different, it also depends on our lifestyle and choices.

There are quite a few home remedies to choose from, which can be used as an add-on to psychotherapy and prescribed antidepressants.

For example Omega-3 fatty acids – that are commonly found in fish. Mostly salmon, sardines, and trout. This substance has been linked to improvement in depressive symptoms and overall brain activity.

Similarly, there is Folate, which is a Folic acid that is found in several foods such as beans, lentils, dark leafy greens, and fortified cereals. All these have been found to improve the effectiveness of medications used in treating depression.

You can also find St. John’s wort that is very useful. This plant, although still not approved for the treatment of depression by the FDA, but has been linked with increased amounts of serotonin in the body correlating to the improvement of depressive symptoms.

All this and few more like exercising, meditation, or going for a walk in a Sun, might help you. As well as CBD oil.

CBD and some of the conditions

At the moment there is just one drug, which FDA has approved – Epidiolex. It contains a purified form of the drug substance CBD, for the treatment of seizures.

This first step shows, that CBD becomes more recognisable not only by people but by the government too.

Some studies have shown that Cannabidiol may have therapeutic benefits for brain disorders such as psychosis, depression, and multiple sclerosis. CBD has been shown to have some antioxidant qualities and it means, that CBD oil is capable of cleaning up toxic substances, which were obtained from food or generated in our body. Conditions as myocardial infarction, inflammatory bowel disease, and stroke often in its centre have these toxic substances.

As well it was found that oxidative stress caused by the release of these toxins generates age-related diseases. For example Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease and yes, it has been found that Cannabidiol protects against these degenerative diseases of the brain, also reducing their clinical progression in patients that are suffering from them.

Additionally, more clinical trials have shown that CBD Hemp oils are very effective in treating Epilepsy and other seizure disorders. CBD might help in the clinical improvement of some autoimmune disease, for example, lupus, or rheumatoid arthritis.

CBD has other benefits, that are currently under investigation. It is including its effects on anxiety and depression, also on social anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.

How Cannabidiol can help me

CBD oil for depression

It has been found, that CBD Hemp oil for depression can be a very good ally. While CBD does not cure the condition, it has been linked to improvement on some of the symptoms.

Various functions of the body are regulated by cannabinoids help, which is produced in our body (endocannabinoids). It includes our mood, pain sensation, sleep, and appetite. Interestingly, these substances apply their actions by binding to specific points of brain cells and is called the receptors. Through receptors, they increase the actions of a substance called serotonin. Serotonin acts to improve our mood and reduce stress levels. It also acts by linking to its receptors in brain cells. When these chemical substances links to their respective receptors, a series of events are triggered, within each brain cell encouraging processes that improve our mood and stress control.

CBD oil for depression can help to improve symptoms by regulating the actions of the endocannabinoids and also increase the effects of serotonin.

Is CBD addictive?

The answer to this question is no. It is not addictive and it has no potential for abuse or dependence. CBD doesn’t contain any addictive substances. Not like THC, which could be addictive if used in higher doses.

Side effects and consumption

It is very important to know that CBD is most effective when used regularly in maintained doses. To reach the best results it would be best, to begin with, a dose of 5mg to 10mg. The dose should remain the same until the desired results achieved. CBD oil effects usually last several hours after ingesting the dose. Most people report feeling better for up to 24 hours. But, probably, only after 90 mins of ingestion, you will begin to notice all these improvements by CBD oil.

Of course, if you have any serious condition, we recommend that you consult with your physician before starting CBD oils. It is important to prevent drug interactions of any medical conditions you may have.

Most importantly, do not discontinue or start any of your drugs while using CBD without consulting with your physician, so there won’t be any interactions with medicine. In our opinion, this is the main side effect with CBD. Other unwanted side effects would be felt, just if taken by too high doses. These symptoms may cause weakening and sleeping. That is why we suggest using CBD oil with regular doses and following instructions on the bottle, in the description of the product or your doctors advise.
